Winter activities in Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis
Natural highs and moments of pure bliss: More winter off the slopes
"We welcome you on board the regional train to Andermatt." Off we go. The flat plains make way for the mountains. The sky is still grey, the road is muddy. The train squeezes through the valley along the Reuss. From Erstfeld, the train covers some 1,000 metres elevation gain in the next 50 minutes. The landscape is getting whiter. Three more curves and a tunnel and the valley opens up. In front of us lies Andermatt on a snow-covered, majestic plateau: We have arrived in the winter paradise. Is there anything more beautiful than fresh mountain air, snow-covered treetops, mountains covered under a white blanket of snow and snowflakes falling quietly from the sky? Winter in the Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis ski resort centers on the basics: fresh air, freedom, a clear view, leaving your own tracks.
The Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis ski area offers everything winter sports enthusiasts desire: 33 lifts, 180 kilometres of slopes, guaranteed snow and excellent train connections from all directions. But there is also that certain extra that is not so obvious: You get off the train, take a deep breath and simply head out into the snow. One step at a time. The crystal-clear air full of oxygen flows into your body and boosts the energy production of the cells. The decreasing air pressure reduces the amount of oxygen in the air. To compensate for this, the body produces more red blood cells. This means that despite the lower content of oxygen in the air, more oxygen is absorbed, and more carbon dioxide is exhaled. This has the same effect as natural doping. It can even be explained scientifically why you’re feeling fit and rejuvenated after a winter getaway in Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis.
But, for the moment, that does not matter. Just listen to the crunch of the snow, from time to time accompanied by the soft ripple of the Oberalpreuss stream - and nothing else. As you step away from the stresses of everyday life you leave only footprints behind. On the short hike from Andermatt to the Nätschen along the Oberalppassstrasse, which is situated a little higher and to the east, you can already feel all the medically proven effects of hiking: Dopamine, the happy hormone, is released, meditative relaxation begins, the beauty of nature stimulates the imagination. That's what you call a successful start to your holiday.
The plus in energy wants to be spent the next day! In addition to skiing, you will be spoilt for choice with things to do: tobogganing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing. No, you want more action. Snowtubing in Sedrun - that's it: Cruising down the 200-metre-long snow tubing slope on a tubular tyre, sometimes forward, sometimes "hindersi" (backwards). You travel comfortably up the slope with the magic carpet, then hop into the tyre, put your feet into the air and off you go. Now in the belly-up position! A fun winter activity that will leave you feeling exhilarated and craving another adrenaline rush!
Now it’s time to explore Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis - by bike. Cycling in winter, isn’t that crazy? Not at all, cycling with FatBikes on snow is just as safe as cycling in summer thanks to the fat tyres. Thrill-seekers can also whizz down the slopes in Disentis where before and after ski operation, the lift is only running for fat bikers. But that was enough action for one day. Tomorrow it's time to relax, and the trend sport cross-country skiing is just the perfect activity.
Combining rapid descents and easy flat terrain, the Sedrun cross-country skiing trail runs from Sedrun to Dieni, covering a loop of 12 km. Choose for yourself which sections of the versatile trail you want to tackle, there’s also the option of going back by train.
Trees and bushes covered in hoarfrost line the trail. You glide through the glistening landscape and all the relaxation that you were feeling while hiking sets in with an incredible intensity. Dopamine and the red blood cells shoot through your veins. Happiness, freedom, lust for life: the plus of Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis.
In Dieni, west of Sedrun, you pass the remains of Putnengia Castle on a steep rocky ridge. The fortified tower, built around 1200, still rises seven metres above the ground today. At the bottom of the valley, you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the Rhine through forests and fields. The illuminated 2-kilometre-long cross-country ski trail between Ara and Giu Mila near Sedrun is particularly romantic at night.
The crowning glory of holidays in Switzerland is an original Swiss fondue in a cosy restaurant along the way. The Ustria Campadi in Sedrun is just one of many cosy places to stop by. In Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis you can not only feel and experience the plus, you can even taste it. The enjoyment of Swiss cheese also boosts dopamine production. Word of honour! Completely satisfied, you doze off on the train on your way home. Thanks to the excellent train service, the day ends with a special plus of relaxation.
